Another poor soul expires after the exhausting fight against depression (this time, a celebrity, a renowned funnyman, no less) and the media is full of tributes for the victim and well-intentioned information about this relentless disease.

Sadness is a word that is often mentioned, used as a synonym. No, depression is not simply sadness. Sadness is the absence of joy, happiness, bliss or any other antonym you want to use. Depression is not simply the absence of cheer. It is the absence of … everything.

Instead of a breathing, living soul there is a black hole where that person is supposed to be. That is what depression is.
